I had a couple of hamsters as pets when I was a little boy (since the folks wouldn't let me get a dog, which is what I really wanted) and I was always fed up with the fact that they were nocturnal and slept all day when I was awake.
I used to jab them through the bars of their cage with the (eraser) end of a pencil so they would wake up and entertain me. Being 7, it never occurred to me that it must've been like being woken up by a punch to the ribs. I regret it now.
