I only cross posted this because, in this case I would like any one hitting the main sift talk page to see it.

Apparently this woman who was 15 months over due to return to return from the dead is being punished for befriending an animal.

Baghdad Pups is an organization that brings the animals home for the soldiers. But, in this case US resources were used by the soldiers commanding officers to seize the dog as it was en route to the airport to be shipped home.

In my opinion, I think that who ever is pulling rank on this one had a botched affair with her or worse.

There have been many, many successful rescue operations by Baghdad Pups and to see some one take hostile action towards something so small is sickening.

Stationed in a desert, under the constant threat of maiming from explosives you would think the US army would like the soldiers to be happy. This is a clear cut case of some one above her playing the I have Rank Card.

In short, tell your friends, maybe something can be done.

By the way... they are trying to court martial her.

"Soldiers can face immediate court-marshal [for befriending animals] and some even see their animals brutally murdered by a direct gunshot to the head from commanding officers who will not bend the rules." - direct quote from http://www.getfreshminds.com/2008/10/baghdad-pups.html

As sad as it is, Iraq is not the cleanest place on Earth. When I was there, it was not uncommon for animals to be shot on sight. Marines were not allowed to have animals because they may be carrying any number of infectious disease. And with so many troops living right next to each other those diseases would spread like wildfire.

P.S. Shooting a dog in the head is not "Brutally murdering." Beating them to death with the butt stock of the rifle would be brutal. Not that just randomly shooting a dog isn't brutal, but if you have to kill a dog in Iraq, a shot to the head is the most humane way of doing so.

MGR, do you remember at what point in time you lost your humanity?

There are scientists who are researching the myth of a head shot being a humane killing.

In order to achieve a kill that is "humane" a certain part of the brain has to be hit. A shot between the eyes does not achieve an instant kill.

If you have ever shot any one in the head you know that this instant kill bullshit is a lie, because they twitch as the brain fires off its last bursts of energy the brain is effectively still trying to save the body. (Unless the spine is severed and then the shooter is spared the gruesome dance of the dead)

However they say that severing the spinal cord causes an instant death, this is a fallacy as well, because the brain can live for a couple of minutes without the heart.

A humane death is some abstract Idea that someone some where made up because they realized they were actually killing people.

I would say that a soldier loses their humanity when the ink hits the paper.

I'd like to argue your post, NR.

During all combat marksmanship training, you are instructed to fire with a "double tap" followed by a finisher - a combo Marines so affectionately call "Two in the heart, one in the mind." If you were to draw an upside-down triangle with the base corners at each eye and the peak landing over the upper lip, you would have your instant-kill target for the head. Place a round within that area and the target drops like a sack of potatoes.

/\ right in the cortex.

The same can be achieved with a knife, and a ball point pen.

I'm sure the "befriending an animal" actually is made to cover iraqis.
